Today we are chatting with the CEO of Narrative, James Broadbent. Man oh man, do we have an awesome topic for you today with all things Artificial intelligence. Whether you’re experienced with AI or totally unfamiliar — James dives into this topic in a way where there is something for everyone. This is going to be juicy if you’re wanting to learn more about this topic that WILL be the future of our workflow as photographs, so buckle up and grab a notebook as we get into it.

EC: How did you launch Narrative?
James: As a destination wedding photographer, I was getting really frustrated that I had to spend most of my days sitting at a computer editing and blogging. We started Select as a culling tool to help edit photos as a way to save photographers time and make their lives easier.

EC: What actually is AI?

James: I think a lot of people know what AI is but they don’t really KNOW what it is. AI is basically trying to mimic human behavior as a computer. You train a computer to learn from past patterns and you help the computer create an output without direction. You give the computer data and as it is trying to learn that data, it has a good response when it is getting closer to what is correct and a bad response when it is not.

EC: What are the different types of AI a photographer can utilize? For ex: photo editing, culling, blogging, etc- could you explain the differences?

James: For blogging, you can hop right into Chat GPT and have AI write you an entire blog post. You can plug in the details from the day and have AI write a very well structured blog post about the day that sounds super authentic.

EC: Will AI eventually take our jobs as a photographer?
James: AI is not a fad that will come and go. AI is definitely here and it will only get better- all the smartest minds in the world are working on this technology right now. It is infiltrating every industry and there is a real fear that it will take our jobs. AI is not going to take your job, but someone that is using AI might. AI can’t do every aspect of your job in every industry.

EC: What role will AI play in the future of photography?

James: I think that in some senses this is all speculation because it is all developing so quickly. Using predictive AI will allow us to continue taking care of the laborious parts of being a photographer. Writing emails, selecting and editing photos, doing taxes… those will all become easier with AI. At Narrative, we are continuing to think about that and we are wanting to allow photographers to spend more time behind the camera.

We talked about so many other amazing points with James in our episode, so be sure to listen to the full episode for all of James’ wisdom on AI!
