Today we have another solo episode for you all, but this time it’s featuring me, Julia! Whether you have a business already, you’re looking to start one, you work in a 9-5 or work in a field you really love, this episode is for YOU. Today I am going to be talking all about my entrepreneurship journey, how to deal with burn out, and how to navigate hustle culture. Let’s dive right in!

Facing Burn Out

It’s so easy to get burnt out as a business owner because it’s very hard to “shut things off” like where as a regular job for the most part you can go home and unwind. But something I’ve struggled with is not being able to shut off (checking emails at night, etc). I’ve had to learn the hard way how to say no, how to set boundaries, put systems in place, etc. It’s hard to set boundaries & disconnect. Because when you are self employed like us, our brand is us. And sadly, our passion can turn into just a job. Another struggle we face is just feeling alone. If you’re like me, I have a small team and of course Toni but for the most part it is just me most of the time. I'm not gonna lie, I can feel lonely at times.

Hustle Culture

Speaking on the topic of burn out, I think part of it comes from hustle culture (this idea that work is everything, being the best) which is always telling us we need to go out and do more more more. Earn more money, do this, do that. I know I've fallen prey to that and have had to take a step back and look at what’s most important to me which is my time spent with the Lord, my family, friends, my health and it’s so easy when you run a business to put it above these things. Burn out is unavoidable.

Some ways to avoid hustle culture & burn out:

  1. Learning to value yourself, value your health/ mental health

  2. Finding your strongest work hours

  3. It’s okay to step away and take breaks, especially off of social media

  4. Creating structure

  5. You can get more done taking breaks

  6. Build a system that works for you - everyone's systems look different

Some things I love about entrepreneurship:

  1. It’s taught me a lot of important life lessons and showed me that I can overcome challenges.

  2. It did  create freedom & flexibility in my life in the long term.

  3. Although it could be lonely at times, I was able to learn how to truly put myself out there, make tons of connections I couldn't have otherwise.

  4. It allows me to do something i absolutely love and am passionate about every single day and meet so many cool people. It allows me to be outside, be creative, and inspired.

  5. Allows me to create something out of nothing

  6. And lastly it’s taught me about finances which is something I always wanted to learn about.

My tips on staying motivated:

  1. Travel outside of your home

  2. Write things down so things aren't floating in your head all the time (like us we just have a creative mindset & always looking to do the next thing)

  3. Finding things that take your mind off of work.

  4. Work towards goals

  5. Remember your why (why you do what you do, don’t forget your why, see results of why you started in the first place).

  6. Focus on the positive & progress.

  7. Remembering the spark that started your business in the first place

Ultimately, whether you have a business, you're looking to start one, or you work a 9-5, just remember burnout is temporary and there are ways to run a successful business without falling into the traps of hustle culture. Regardless of what you do, as long as it’s something that brings you joy, passion, excitement, you're able to serve other & do your job well. I think it’s 100% worth it to pursue & push through the hard seasons of burn out. No matter what you do you have so much value, purpose, and worth and can bring something unique to the table no one else can. Even if it’s something temporary i think there’s always something to be said about doing and finishing a job out well.
