We are so excited for today’s episode! We’re chatting all about copywriting with Abby Hess, owner of Studio Tell, a Copywriting studio for creatives who believe in clear marketing & ethical copy. We dive deep into why copywriting is a game changer for your business, what it’s like to work with a copywriter, how to improve your copy all across the board whether that be on your website or social media platforms, and so much more on the topic of copyrighting! This episode is definitely for all creative business owners and you don’t want to miss it- so let’s dive in!

EC: Why should creatives care about copywriting?

Abby: Creatives are so good at producing and creating — but those things can’t always stand on their own. Someone can see your beautiful photo, but if you are not telling someone about that photo or the story behind it, it may not connect to them. For example, on your website as a photographer, if you are not putting the proper wording about how they can hire you, who you are, what you do, etc then you are not actually going to reach people in the way that you are wanting to.

EC: Can you talk about copywriting specifically for photographers and what photographers should know?

Abby: I work with photographers and for photographers, it is an oversaturated market. So the question is how do photographers stand out in that space? Maybe you are a classic wedding photographer, and that’s okay — you can say that! You don’t need a specific niche that is so different and unique. When it’s all said and done, sometimes people just want a really good classic photographer. What does make you unique is your individual story and how you got there. That is what people to connect to! Don’t be afraid of telling your story because that is what sets you apart.

EC: What does it look like to work with a copy writer? What is the process like and how do we find the words that will resonate with a brand?

Abby: What a copywriter can help you do is walk you through the process of finding your voice. A lot of my job is asking the right questions. What I do for my clients is first send them a questionnaire to help get inside your head. From there, I would work on writing a first draft of copy and then we go back and forth and adjust things. A lot of the work is within those questions and figuring out what it is that makes you different.

EC: I just don’t have time to write… What should I do?

If you have the budget and bandwidth, definitely hire a copywriter! However, if you do not have that option, one big thing I would say is to focus on the first one or two headers on your website. If you have your clear tagline on the first section of your website, that will automatically set you apart. You don’t want someone to go to your website and have no idea who you are or what you do because they will leave your website. Just spend a half hour focusing on that to get started!
